Our SMH of the day comes from Massachusetts where a would-be burglar got his head stuck under the door for nine hours as he was trying to escape!
We’ve all heard about thieves getting “caught” in the act, but in the case of Tuesday’s Rent-A-Center’s would be robber…we may want to say, “stuck” in the act. And stuck he was! From 12 Midnight to 9 AM Tuesday, 53-year-old Manuel Fernandez found himself stuck under a metal garage door at the Rent-A-Center in Brockton, Massachusetts.
As Manuel tells it, he was there to fix the door of the furniture-electronics store, when it just happened to slam on his head…pinning him down for 9 hours! Now do you honestly think, a repairman would be fixing a door at 12 AM?
Well, I imagine neither did John Rodriguez, the Store Manager who unexpectedly found Manuel under the Rent-A-Center door at 8:45 AM. After first asking Manuel if he was O.K., according to a recording on John’s cell phone, he then told Manuel to just “hang tight” and wait for the Police. As for hanging tight…do you really think Manuel thought he had any way to get out of the predicament he had gotten himself into? Don’t think so!
Police did arrive for Manuel as John had promised, and at 9:00 AM he was freed from the garage door that police say Manuel had pried open with a metal bedpost which ended up failing causing it to fall and/or rest on Manuel’s head after he first tried to squeeze underneath the door.
The good news is that the incident did not prove fatal although it could have been if more momentum had occurred as explained by Brockton Police Department’s Detective Lt. Paul Bonanca to CBS Boston.
Now for the bad news–Manuel was arrested for breaking and entering and malicious property damage since the Police did not believe he was there at midnight to fix a broken door!
However, Manuel, who also told Police he was homeless, did complain of a headache so he was taken to a hospital to be checked out.
But you might say no matter how you look at it—it wasn’t a very good day for the would-be robber in Brockton, Massachusetts! Watch the video below:
