Halloween Horror Movies: ‘Carne: The Taco Maker’

By Maureen Halpert

If you like horror movies with a twist, you may want to check out the low-budget independent first dark-comedy Chicano slasher flick—Carne: The Taco Maker–especially if you want to chuckle and see your best pal jump in your lap. And being that Halloween is just around the corner, this might be the perfect time to watch this dark satirical tale that is sure to become a cult classic.

The 1 hour 23 minute film takes place in the inner city on the streets of Los Angeles and incorporates some romance, deceit, and a “creepy family tradition.” The story itself revolves around a curbside taco stand known for serving the best tacos in town. Don Taco is the owner of this local taqueria and happens to make a tidy profit for his tasty tacos. It may seem like any other taco stand, but there is a secret recipe based on a tradition that has been around his family for years that Don swears by…something his loyal customers are totally unaware of. And if they were…OMG!

The cast of characters and entangled relationships are as bizarre as what is behind the unknown taco meat. And the family dynamics between Don Taco (Mario Valdez Juarez) and his crazy younger brother who works alongside him, Memo (Rene A. Rodriguez), and their immoral entrepreneur mother, Rosa (Rosemary Soto Rodriguez), is beyond twisted. As for the character of Don Taco, he comes across as alarmingly charming and charismatic–while also being eerie and macabre—a side not seen by his clientele.

Todd David Schwartz of the Beverly Hills Times describes “Carne” as being “crazily entertaining,” while calling it “dark, weird and unlike anything else that’s out there right now.“ And once, you see it, you will probably agree.

So for those of you who are hungry for horror and “graphic” scenes with a glimpse of humor plus telenovela-like acting and Spanglish, you’re in luck. Carne: The Taco Maker can be found on all major and minor Cable/Satellite VOD operators as well as major Internet platforms including iTunes, Amazon Instant Video, Google Play, Vudu, Xbox Video and more.

And make sure to have plenty of snacks and your favorite beverages to get you through it! And don’t forget to invite your best gal and guy pal(s) to hold on to!

Carne: The Taco Maker is written and directed by Rene Rodriguez, founder and director of Los Angeles’ Teatro Urbano/Chango Cinema. Timothy Sky and Michael Archuleta creatively did the music for the film, bringing the story to life.

Check out the trailer–and keep in mind some of the scenes are graphic and chilling and not for the faint of heart!
