The Media is going crazy at the moment at a prank that went terribly wrong. Reports have revealed that the radio station show responsible for the Kate Middleton radio prank has been terminated!
A nurse, mum of two Jacintha Saldanha, 46, who worked at the King Edward VII private hospital has taken her own life, after receiving a prank call from two DJs from an Australian Radio station.
This was no ordinary prank, The DJ’s called the hospital where the pregnant Duchess of Cambridge was staying at the time of the call. The two DJs called up the hospital pretending to be the Queen and Prince Charles while Kate was being treated for morning sickness. The two DJs were Mel Greig and Michael Christian from 2Day FM.
Radio DJs Mel Greig and Michael Christian, from Sydney’s 2Day FM station, rang the hospital in the early hours of Tuesday after the Duchess’s admission. Greig pretended to be the Queen, while Christian was in the background as “Prince Charles”.
Greig asked to speak to “my granddaughter Kate”. Saldanha thought she was speaking to the Queen and told Greig: “Oh yes, just hold on ma’am”. She then put the call through to a duty nurse, who divulged intimate medical details about the duchess.
Chief executive officer Rhys Holleran has spoken with the presenters. They are both deeply shocked and at this time we have agreed that they not comment about the circumstances. SCA and the hosts have decided that they will not return to their radio show until further notice out of respect for what can only be described as a tragedy.”
Mel and Michael faced a barrage of abuse on their twitter and social media accounts which have now been closed. They have stressed how sorry they are and are seeking counselling to deal with the tradegy.
Sources have reported that Jacintha was found unconscious by a fellow worker at 9.30am, paramedics were then called to try and save her but to no avail. They expect an inquest to conclude she took her own life.
The hospital’s chairman Lord Glenarthur said he wanted to ‘protest’ against the ‘extremely foolish’ gag which he branded ‘truly appalling’.
Lord Glenarthur said her death was ‘tragic beyond words’.
His letter to Southern Cross Austereo said the immediate consequence of the station’s ‘premeditated and ill-considered actions’ led to the ‘humiliation’ of Ms Saldanha and another nurse.
‘I appreciate that you cannot undo the damage which has been done but I would urge you to take steps to ensure that such an incident could never be repeated,’ it added.
Kate and Will have issued a statement on this tragedy. The statement read.
“Their thoughts and prayers are with Jacintha Saldanha’s family, friends and colleagues at this very sad time,”
This is truly an extreme case of a prank going wrong it is unlikely that the Radio presenters will return to the station. They will never get over this tragedy caused by their bad taste. Mel Greig and Michael Christian have expressed the desire to speak to the media. Crisis Talks are now under way at the company that owns 2Day FM, Clearly they have a lot of explaining to do and they need to ascertain the future of the station.
Do you think they are completely to blame for this tragedy? Is this prank alone a reason to take your life?
What are you thoughts?
